We were due to go away and although a neighbour would come and feed the hens we couldn't expect them to come early morning to let them out and late evening (10pm!) to shut them in at dusk. This gadget was the solution. Also,I don't have to wait up to put them to bed at dusk any more!

Think we will end up buying the timer as we are having a bit of trouble getting it set just right, needs bit of tweeking to adjust time of closing but opens long before I want to get out of bed in morning. | 07-Jun-10 |  | Worked after some adjustment. Straight from the box it worked, but at the lightest setting was closing gone 9.30pm & opening before 4am (summer) - too late/early. I had to mask the light sensor with cable sleeving to give the adjustment knob a useful range. Now works well but I should not have had to do this. (Wells Poultry added : this is why there is an optional timer available. Late closing / early opening is not an issue in a secure run but we advise using a timer for free range birds.)

This was easy to fit (we used the duck door as it fitted easily on our homemade hen house)and adjust if you want a bit more time for your girls to go in at night. My birds get pecky if they are not out asap in the morning, and this has reduced feather pulling in the house.

| 31-Mar-10 | | What about an override switch? I have been using this for a month now. The only issue I have is when I want to close the door early. It would be a great enhancement if there was some sort of override switch. Other than this I cannot fault the design. The door closes very slowly - no danger of a chicken getting guillotined. (Wells Poultry Added - the switch you mention is available as an option VSBb SA)

| 11-Mar-10 | | Don't waste time, trying to make a door opener, this, although a bit pricey,is worth having, it does everything it says on the can, I've had four hens for nearly a year and although I'm a pretty competent engineer could not even come close to making anything this slick and easy to fit.

At the moment I think it closes slightly later than I would like but this can be adjusted once I find a small enough screwdriver!

| 19-Feb-10 | | Door Opener. This is simply brilliant. We installed it with our own wood door. You can set it up with virtually any type of closing using pulleys to direct the line. Very easy to set up and adjust if it closes too early. Early mornings dont have to be so early and the girls get safe at night.

Our last opener failed during the recent cold weather when ice kept forming on the door (causing it to freeze shut and the line to snap).

The other has been tricky, but largely because of door problems and because I forgot to knot the string BEFORE attaching it to the door - new installers, take that as a tip!

I used pulley to lift door through 90degs.In the morning hens would barge through door lifting it up,knocking line off the pulley causing it to jam.OK when used vertically.Device uses knots in line to move levers to shut off pwr,had many,many probs with the knots pulling thro holes=flat batteries

The instructions don't tell you that you need to extend the cord unless its fitted directly above the door. Slight issue with the light sensor as it sometimes closes before the girls go bed. There appears to be no adjustment.(Wells Poultry added - there is adjustment for the closing light level )

Only issue I found is the shaft wasn't mounted correctly in both bushes and the grub screw on the motor too tight to adjust. Had to bend the 2nd bush plate to get it in.

Thanks to your expert trouble-shooting over the phone, I was able to determine that the door I'd made from a sheet of plastic sheeting was too light to activate the mechanism. Tying a heavy bolt on solved it!

When I contacted Wells Poultry about this they did not really seem particularly interested and suggested I contact the manufacturer direct which I did. They were very good, and sent an exchange unit (Wells Poultry added: The quickest way to recify a faulty unit is to contact the manufacturer who will send a replacment. We don't have the facilities to repair in the UK so all faulty units need to be sent away for repair)

| 02-Jan-10 | | Fantastic! In Tasmania we don't worry so much about foxes (yet) but I wanted to keep the chooks in the run until they had laid. Now with the timer set to open the door at midday and close after dusk no eggs are laid in random bushes anymore but the chooks can run around the block all afternoon. Perfect!

I am writing this with about 16 inches of snow on the ground and sub zero temperatures and the opener (in conjunction with the aluminuim hen door has worked perfectly every day.

We had to set the light sensitivity to maximum, so that the door did not close too early. The first time we used it, the chickens were left outside! No problems since then at all. First one opens up to a pen, the second one opens up before dark with the timer. Could you make one that opens up just before dark for a hour or two with out have to adjust the timer as daylight changes?
